The Wigner-Smith (WS) time-delay concepts have been used extensively in quantum mechanics to characterize delays experienced by particles interacting with a potential well. This article formally extends WS theory Maxwell's equations and explores its applications electromagnetics. matrix relates lossless reciprocal system's scattering frequency derivative allows for the construction of modes that experience well-defined group when system. matrix' entries guiding, scattering, radiating systems are energy-like overlap integrals electric and/or magnetic fields arise upon excitation system via ports. has numerous electromagnetics, including characterization multiport systems, description electromagnetic terms elementary processes, sensitivities antenna impedance matrices.
